FREE English Classes For Mexican American Parents

Maricela Ruiz was ashamed of her inability to speak English.  She moved from Mexico to Pasadena California, and found difficulty trying to communicate on a daily basis.  Leave it to The Golden State to provide Mother’s Club Family Learning Center– a non-profit organization that provides English classes to parents and kids.

“I’d go home crying” Ruiz told LATimes.  It was just too difficult to communicate, so Maricela had to rely on her husband and kids to help with errands.  The language barrier was overwhelming, and Ruiz was embarrassed and isolated.

Mother’s Club has been around since 1961.  Families in the program attend classes everyday.  The Holiday Campaign (LA Times Family Fund) raises all the cash to support “literacy programs run by non profit organizations that serve low-income children, adults, and, families who are reading below grade levels at risk of illiteracy or who have limited English proficiency.”

Maricela, is now headed to college.
